“Maybe…maybe there is a beast…maybe it’s only us….”
– Simon, Lord of the Flies, Chapter 5, Page 80

Summary: In Chapters 4 and 5, we see Jack go off the deep end. The boys kill a pig and suddenly they don’t seem like innocent little boys anymore. They almost get rescued, but then they don’t. Ralph’s leadership is challenged. Piggy is still getting bullied. There might be a beast, and it comes out of the water?
Or is the beast in all of us?

In your first post, please answer and discuss the following prompt:

Here is a quote to start us off: “Simon became inarticulate in his effort to express mankind’s essential illness.” (P. 80)

Like a Star @ heaven  Recall how the boys acted when they first arrived on the island. How has the boys’ behavior on the island changed since they’ve been on the island, and how do they act now? Is there a word to describe the new “behavior”? Why do you think they have changed? Does the change only have to do with what Simon calls “mankind’s essential illness”, or do you think it is purely outside factors that have caused the boys to start acting this way? Finally, how come some of them are changing while others not so much?

Again, remember to use specific examples and quotes from the book. The posts are graded out of 25 points.

Also, don’t forget to reply to your classmates! Check in every once in a while to see if someone has responded to your posts.

Everything is due by 6:30 AM.

When the boys first got to the island they were trying to replicate the order of the society they came from. Now they are getting away from that idea of order. The new behavior could be describe as a bit war like. They changed because there is a lack of true authority on the island. I think outside factors are to blame for the behavior. Some of them are still under the control of others so they change less.

"Things are breaking up. I don't understand why. We began well;we were happy. And then-...And then people started getting frightened." Ralph pg.82

Ralph is starting to realize that they need to enforce the rules and start making people work and control the little'uns. All Jack cares about is hunting pigs  pig and being mean to piggy pig . I feel like Ralph is going to start being nicer to Piggy pig  because they both are trying to get people under control.

"Because the rules are the only thing we've got!" Ralph pg. 91

The kids are starting to fall apart and its all Jack's fault. He didn't keep the fire going when they could have been rescued and he keeps yelling at Ralph and favoring hunting pigs pig  over actual necessities. The kids are defiantly going to spilt into gangs and things are going to get harder. Im surprised no one has died yet.

Reply to Buster posey: I agree with you the boys are getting out of control now and need new strategies to survive. I think the boys have changed because they can do what they want on the island and I think most of them fear what they do not know will happen on the island. I think some of the boys are changing because it is a new lifestyle on the island and they need to learn how to adapt and survive with one another.

"Things are breaking up. I don't understand why. We began well; we were happy. And then-" (Ralph,pg.82)

When the boys first arrived on the island, they all planned things, set up guidelines and rules, and made jobs and what was expected out of each person. For example, they set up the conch shell idea where they only person that could talk was the person holding the conch shell. They planned a very organized community that they were going to be living in until they were found and rescued. The boy's behaviors have changed due to anger and frustration and little disagreements that have affected an outcome of a situation. Most of the boys on the island have went against another person on the island, due to a disagreement. Boys are opposing the ideas and the acts of other people because they thought that the time could be better used by doing something else, just like what happened with Jack, when Ralph and Simon said that the time would have been better used in building shelters rather than hunting. I think there are many factors that add up to the frustration, but I think that the main reason is that people are having different ideas and they are getting in arguments over what would've been a better use of time. I also think just the overall fact of them all being stuck on this island with the mindset that they are not going to be rescued and they will all just eventually just die.

I agree with buster posey. The boys are getting way out of control now. They need to stop being so warlike and need to start being more calm and find a way to get found and taken home. They need to start making more rules to keep a safe and stable community. Now it seems like they might do something crazy like cannibalism. They are very mean to the less fit and less helpful ones like piggy.

I agree with Beastboy13 and buster posey. There is no organization from the leaders like Ralph, Simon, and Piggy to the littluns. Ralph has became more frustrated with Simon for not having the fire ready for the ship. They need to lay down some ground rules and people have to listen to Piggy. Also need to make shelters so if the beast is real, they have somewhere to go.

The older boys like Ralph, Simon, and Piggy need to show that they are the leaders by being mean and commanding to the little kids. It seems the little kids are getting let of the leash sorta say. It seems like Ralph is doing most of the needed work like making shelters but Simon is hunting but he did kill a pig and cooked it.
Ralph needs to do what Simon is doing. Even though Simon hit Piggy, he is getting something done like getting food unlike Piggy and Ralph. But if the fire was ready (which was Simon's job) they may have been rescued off the island and the book would have ended

I disagree with 43 turkey because of the older boys are mean to the young ones, they will just get mad and and revolt against them. But that's none of my business pig

Post Due Weds. 4/6 Empty A Change in Nature

Post by bubbles.616 Tue Apr 05, 2016 9:52 pm

When the boys first arrived on the island, they mostly acted civil, attempting to remain a part of society. However, as time went on, the kids began to act less like human beings, and more barbaric and animal-like. I think they have changed, simply because they've started to give up. The more time that passes without being saved, the less hope they have that they are eventually going to be. Simon's "mankind's essential illness" theory somewhat contributes to the boys' new behavior, but there could be an infinite number of outside factors that the readers do not necessarily know about, or fully understand. Simon knows that there is good and evil in everyone, it is just a matter of choosing between the two. To me, others, such as Jack, are changing more than the majority of the boys due to the lack of parental and adult supervision and guidance. Since Jack is one of the oldest of the boys, he feels he should be in charge, and begins to manipulate and even control some of the younger kids and their decisions, based what he's likely seen leaders in his old societal life do.

"And then people started getting frightened."(Ralph 82) I feel as if the boys are feeling more threatened than they did when they first arrived and wanting to have more control and grasp to their surroundings to what lies ahead of them, but also getting carried away with their actions. A word to sum up the new behavior is rambunctious. I think outside factors to contribute to the boys' change in behavior. Some of them might be changing while the others remain the same since they've all had different experiences within the island.

I 100% agree with @Buster Posey. The kids are definitely attempting to recreate the societal order from which they came. However, as most of us are probably learning, there are some flaws in our government today. The boys probably saw this and wished to work around it, or even didn't fully understand the type of government in which our civilization categorizes itself today. This is probably why they created their own, simpler version, with just a leader, and "the people". If they are there for a very long period of time (many years), their brains will develop they will see the flaws in this plan too. They will probably continue to readjust their previous choices as time goes on.

The boys followed the rule when they first arrived the island. But later, they kind of out control and acted mean to others. The word of uncivilized can be describe their new behavior. I think they have changed both because "mankind's essential illness" and outside factories.I think they like normal people will have wicked mental sometimes specially they live in island. They also have outside factories such as they have disagreement to the rules and people. Some of them changed while some of them don't because some will obey the rule and some of them don't really want to obey the rule, they think they are better than other.

In the beginning of the book the a form of civilization is somewhat made and order was shaky but it was there at least. A leader is established and order is set between all the boys. But as the book goes on the boys begin to get wilder. They realize they don’t have to listen to Ralph, and start to listen to Jack more. There is an imbalance of power and tension between the two elder boys which can be felt by all the boys. Where there is chaos in leadership, there is chaos in civilization. The little boys are also scared of a “beast”, but honestly what else would you expect for six year olds. Though seeing this mentioned multiple times in the book, it might hold some significance, and there might possibly even be a beast. What a Face

In the beginning of the novel, all were in touch with civilization, and seemed to not worry as much. However, I feel that fear has consumed all the boys represented in a beast and the boys do not know how to handle it, especially the littluns. "...then I saw something moving among the trees, something big and horrid." (85) This shows how terrible their fears are and how they seem to get worse overtime. Also, Jack seems to be  even more controlling as he does not follow the rules and prevents them from getting rescued.

The boys are becoming evil and jack is the most evil out of all of them. Someone will defiantly die later in the book because of this, Jack will soon try to become leader in the near future.

I agree with hot.pocket and that they didn't seem to worry as much but now that this is more survival than them not having parents and that they can do whatever they want.

I think that when the boys first got to the island, they were all scared because they didn't know what was going on. They tried to maintain stability by creating rules and choosing leaders in hopes that they would be able to survive. At first, they all seemed hopeful that they would be rescued, but I think as time goes on, they start to realize that the state in which they're in may be permanent. They start to go against the rules and each other because they each want to do what they think is best for themselves. Naturally, when you put a group of young boys together, they will all want power. So tension is created between certain characters on what the rules should be. This obviously causes many problems and disagreements arise among the boys.
