Prompt for Chapter 12 of Lord of the Flies
Due: Friday, April 15th

Many critics of Lord of the Flies have interpreted the events that happen on the island to be a microcosm of the actual world. Please answer the following questions:

1. What is a microcosm?
2. In what ways do you see the island (from the society that the boys have created, to the events that happen, to the way the boys interact with each other, etc.) as a microcosm of our real world? Really think through all the aspects of this story and try to interpret this story in as many ways possible.
3. Do you think that this interpretation is accurate? In other words, do you think the things that happen on the island are true to what you see happen in real life? If yes, why? If not, why not? Don’t forget to think about the symbols and themes, and not just what literally happened!

As usual, don’t forget to use quotes and examples from the text and please reply to one another! If you’re looking for the best grade, be specific and show that you are thinking critically about the novel!

A microcosm is people, and society as a "mini-world". Lord of the Flies could be viewed as a microcosm in a few different ways. First, the boys interact similar to how the rest of the people on earth react to each other. The boys started off friends, but as they grew to know each other for longer, they started to disagree, and even fight. People on the whole world can be friends one day, and argue the next, just like the lord of the flies depicted. The society that the boys have created is similar, yet different to the real-world. It is similar because, in the world, there are many different rulers, and opinions. The lord of the flies is different from the rest of the world because there is not a true established "government"/system of order. In the beginning, there was more order in things, but as they story continued, they lost rule, as well as their system of government. I think this interpretation is accurate, but only to a certain extent. The boys on the island reacted to each other, and certain events, in a very similar manner that they rest of the world does. One example that proves that the lord of the flies is a microcosm, but also is not, is the symbolism of the conch shell. It was the boys' established rule, that you must hold the conch to speak. Also, if you heard the conch blown, you had to assemble for a meeting. As the story continued, though, the conch had less and less meaning, until nobody really respected the conch, or payed attention to it. So, like in the real world, they had an established rule, but it quickly died down, which makes it different from the real-world.

Microcosm is the representation of something on a smaller scale.(google def) It means smaller world. The society that the kids on the island created was right at first having one leader. Than after Ralph got overthrown by Jack and lost his power. Everything seemed normal until Jack got ideas for spilling blood by beating kids for no reason and hunting other kids acting as if they were kids. After Jack would order to steal from Piggy and Ralph, when they are asleep. This society also happenes or at least happened in our world but in the early ages. We would have a ruler get people to join his group, lead his group and after get overthrown. Than we also had people getting killed and tortured for jo reason or false excusations. The things happening on the island are what happens or happened in our world. We had rulers. We had rulers getting overthrown. We had people getting killed for an object which would symbolize power, and we had people die for false excusations.

A microcosm is a representation of something on a much smaller scale, it means "small world". The society it first on the island that was created by the boys was good and they had one leader than rough-cut overthrown by Jack everything seemed OK until Jack wanted to hurt everyone and hunt things for pretty much little reason Jack even makes The kids steal from piggy and Ralph while they were sleeping the society happened in the world but in the early ages The Islander presents a small world almost like a government we're basically absolute monarchy turns to revolutions in sort of a Civil War I would say in this book the island is actually the complete opposite of a microcosm in the sense that I think the island is representing A smaller version of the corrupt absolute monarchy government that I just described glasses symbolize power and people die for the glasses and other people almost die for the glasses people died for false accusations it is just very corrupt I think this I think this interpretation is very accurate because if you look around World War I times there were lots of revolutions in Russia and people once they figure out that the monarchy is bad because lots of times they are brainwashed by the ruler they revolts in a group or another single person tries to overtake that monarch Who is in this case Ralph's being overtaken by Jack then Jack becomes very corrupt he kills people for no reason like I said earlier people die for False Accusations people die over objects like the glasses

A Microcosm is people in their “small world”. In the book the boys land on an island and they create a society for themselves to live upon. This is just a microcosm of the world in sense of geography meaning it’s a little island on the earth. In the beginning of the book a kid says “This is an island…”(p.7). But its also it is microcosm in the sense that the people on the island have been around each other in school but never knew of each other's existence till they reached the island. In the book no one really knows each other till they arrive on the island. Ralph asks the boys what he was once called he replied “They used to call me ‘Piggy’”(p.11). The book is also a small world because the life they live for the time they are on the island is the boy's small part of the world. In the book they start to civilize themselves to survive one of the kids says “Vote for a chief!”(p.22). As the kids become closer as friends they start to disagree. The Kids argue over the little things. For the lord of the Flies they live in a world that they have to figure it out as they go verse just getting it and knowing everything. For example the kids search for food as in the rest of the world you can buy it . I think that this interpretation is accurate because they go on with their lives in their own world on this island. If this were to happen in real life i think that most of what happens in the story would happen in real life. In the book the boys hunt the pigs for food and search the island for water and resources. Before beginning we did a what if activity. In the activity we were given a similar situation and we came up with what we’d do. After reading the class and the kids in the story came up with a lot of the same ideas.

A microcosm is a representation of something on a small scale. The boys' society is much smaller than any other society in the world because there is only a small amount of boys all together. When Ralph and Jack create two different groups, their societies are even smaller, and they may not even be considered a society. Yes, things that occur on the island are similar to events in our society today because people are led by authority and their is rules citizens must follow. Also, people even for fight for food and resources like Jack and Ralph do as well as the other boys on the island.

A microcosm is a community, place, or situation that is small. The boys society is very small compared to the rest of the world because there is only a small number of boys on the island compared to the huge amount of people in the world. I do think that this is accurate because what happens on the island is relevant to what happens the real world because when people take control others do as they say and just like when Jack and Ralph set up two different groups people in todays society do the same. People chose sides and leaders who they think they will benefit from.

A microcosm is a a community or a place. during the book the boys sort of set up a society to survive. at first they elect ralph as the leader, soon after, jack doesn't like the way the ralph does things and jack leaves Ralph's group and makes his own tribe. The two groups have a lot of problems and conflicts between each other. Jack ruins Piggy's glasses and doesn't even care, they also kill Simon when they mistaken him as the beast. I think that this would be the way that people act because this is the way a society works, the government sets up rules and laws for people to follow. there are also certain people who dont like they way the government controls and handles certain things, and might go there own way.

A microcosm is "a community, place, or situation regarded as encapsulating in miniature the characteristic qualities or features of something much larger." At first they were on a good direction with one leader and they made friends with everyone. As time went on conflict became to happen between some of the boys. When jack and ralph slip up into two different groups it changed the society on the island and made things harder and more difficult, There were less boys working together and more against each other .

A microcosm, is the world on a smaller scale. There is only a small amount of boys but they seem to be very diverse. I also do believe that the the island is representative of the real world. Because there are real instances of people valuing other things over what others value.

Microcosm is something small which represents something much bigger. In the story I think that the island represents what the earth is. The way the boys tries to set up a order and ruling system on the island is almost like a democracy on earth today "let's have a vote. Yes! Vote for a chief"(pg.22). Also allot of the book had characters side with others based on appearances. In real life our society can be very judgmental based off of how a person may look, in the book the kids were quick to side with Ralph because he had a good appearance "there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance"(pg.19). The way that Jack felt more confident with a mask on can perfectly relate to how some people on earth also act differently with a mask on (liked we talked about in class). Things on the island are true to what I see in real life, these examples above prove that what was happening on the island is a small scale of what happens in the real world.
