Prompt for Chapter 12 of Lord of the Flies
Due: Friday, April 15th

Many critics of Lord of the Flies have interpreted the events that happen on the island to be a microcosm of the actual world. Please answer the following questions:

1. What is a microcosm?
2. In what ways do you see the island (from the society that the boys have created, to the events that happen, to the way the boys interact with each other, etc.) as a microcosm of our real world? Really think through all the aspects of this story and try to interpret this story in as many ways possible.
3. Do you think that this interpretation is accurate? In other words, do you think the things that happen on the island are true to what you see happen in real life? If yes, why? If not, why not? Don’t forget to think about the symbols and themes, and not just what literally happened!

As usual, don’t forget to use quotes and examples from the text and please reply to one another! If you’re looking for the best grade, be specific and show that you are thinking critically about the novel!

In this story, you can see unification crumble as their time on the island get longer. For example, the beast that there were claims of, could be a real beast but it could be the boys themselves. The first report of a beast was shortly after the boys' unification started slipping and they were slowly but surely all, either, taking a path of survival and hopes of rescue, or a path of savage like, Meat hungry behavior. This can happen in real life. As you know someone more and more you will see their true colors and determine wether you want to associate yourself with them. Things in this book, maybe less exaggerated, could happen in real life.

Microcosm is humankind as a mini characteristic as appose to something much larger. As the story goes on more people are becoming enemies with each other and when it comes to drastic measure the true colors of some are revealed. Like when Jack and his group killed Simon over a conflict over the idea of a beast. Like in real life, you may think that you know someone but when their true self comes out, you may be totally wrong.
I do think that the things on the island is true to what I see in real life. By friendships and if you truly know that person.

@trump2020 I agree with what you said when the boys on the island are betraying each other and it is an example of what happens in real life.

A microcosm is a representation of something on a much smaller scale, also meaning "small world". Both in real life and on the island in the book people find themselves in a situation with people they do not know. In this situation people tend to look for a leader to follow, on the island this leader was Ralph. However, because of secrets, misunderstandings and disagreements that unification under on person can easily crack, as seen in the after affects of the disagreement between Ralph and Jack. In life people can make wrong decisions and head down the wrong path, on the island Jack and his followers are an exaggerated representation of those people as they are depicted as savages.

A microcosm is a a "little world", or a smaller version of the world. The civilization that Ralph and the boys created was similar to the real world because they had civil wars, Ralph's tribe against Jack's tribe. Many countries have their own wars in their own territory. In the larger world, people are trying to survive by keeping jobs and spending money on clothes, food, electricity, etc... On the island, Ralph and the boys are trying to survive by hunting, keeping a fire, and harvesting fruits which is similar to people keeping jobs and buying food because they're both trying to live and survive. The events that occur on the island are similar to real life events in symbolic ways. There are rivals on the island, mainly between Ralph and Jack which happens in real life especially between politicians. Ralph uses the fire as a survival skill which is alike to people buying food as a survival skill. The things that happen on the island are similar to what happens in real life to an extent. They're more symbolically alike such as the fire example but are literally alike in the example of the civil war.

@Soccer I agree with and like what you said about how in real life and in the book you can know somebody, but not truly know somebody because of their "beast" side.

A microcosm is a smaller version of something that is really much larger. The island does have it's similarities to society today. The boys have had situations that arise in the world today, such as how Jack was power hungry and essentially overthrew Ralph. In the world today people become power hungry in a variety of situations. The boys tribes also had assigned jobs and tasks that would help the boys survive, alike the world today. These scenarios, although over exaggerated, could happen today. It is common that people will cause others to betray and leave their friends to join them instead, like Jack did to Ralph.

Microcosm means small world this relates to the book becuase when the man in the parachute fell and everyone thought it was a beast they all started to come up with different theories about the beast sole belibed it some did not and on the island there was a feud between both tribes ones who wanted to be warriors and some who wanted to just leave the island and many things went wrong and at the end they all ended up being saved and they all got along again

Microcosm is a version of something small but has a bigger meaning. The island is a macronism to the realm word. The island is small and there are barely any people but even so they were able to corrupt humanity. Jack forgot what he was really going for to survive the island.I think the things that happen is the island is true and happen is real life. People forget that they are humans and go crazy and don't care what they have to do to get what they want.
